Piling Rig Has Arrived

A piling rig has arrived on site at Westown ready to drill in the piled foundations for both the new loop road and sections of Westown Square.

This particular construction machine is known as a Continuous Flight Auger or CFA Piling Rig and is used to install piles that are drilled and concreted in one continuous operation. The CFA Rig drills holes in the ground, concrete is then injected through the flight (top of the drill feeder) and into the hole as the auger (or drill bit) is extracted. The reinforcement cage is then inserted into the wet concrete.

The use of the CFA method is determined by the structural engineer based on the soil type of the site, the fill depth and the load of the structure the piles will be supporting.

This rig will be used for the piling of the new loop ramp and bridge over Kassier Rd that will provide direct access into Westown, so look out for it in action!
