The Shongweni area is well known for its lush green belt and the numerous sporting and outdoor activities it offers, which is why the Westown active green belt is such an integral part of the development.
What will make Westown different to any other developments in the province are its location, ecological attributes and personality. The strong agricultural roots and country character of this place form part of the broader planning principles of Westown and will help drive the connection and ownership the local communities feel towards this new ‘city of the west’.
A priority of the Westown development team is to prioritise the maintenance of ecosystem services through rehabilitation, so as to enhance their functionality. The project potentially allows for the recouping of functional wetland and vegetation habitats that previously were non-existent within the landscape.
Not only will this create a well-functioning habitat, but it will allow for the activation of a useable green belt that is safe, secure and integrated not only with Westown but with the surrounding activities and outdoor pursuits so prevalent in the area.
There is much to be done in this regard but Westown’s sustainability agenda, which includes a management association, is well-defined and looks to deliver optimised functionality not only in terms of safety, greening and maintenance but critically water, waste, and energy demand too.
