As the work on site progresses, so too does our planning to create the spaces that will make Westown a ground-breaking destination, places like the Westown Park Trails.
The Shongweni area is well known for its character and history, its lush green belt and the popular outdoor activities of horse riding, trail running, mountain biking, walking, and birding.
Westown will embrace this character by creating public spaces that are safe, clean, and well-managed through the Westown Management Association, and are used in a way that builds an active, positive community and a sought-after destination.
This approach reflects the recommendations made by the global organisation Project For Public Spaces, on creating community-powered public spaces. In their view, most great places no matter how big or small or where they are in the world, share four key attributes:
- They are accessible and well-connected to other important places in the area
- They are comfortable and project a good image
- They attract people to participate in activities there
- They are sociable environments in which people want to gather and visit again and again
