Welcome to
A High-Street Shopping & Lifestyle Experience
Opening in March 2025 and primed to set the trend in retail experiences, WESTOWN SQUARE is a world-class shopping destination designed as a high street environment where indoor meets outdoor and the characteristics of the Shongweni green belt are reflected.
The first development activity within the greater 100ha Westown urban core, the 50 000m² Westown Square high-street retail experience brings together shopping, dining, living and recreation for all ages, with a national tenant mix enhanced by local niche offerings that will reach the Outer West community and beyond.
A key component of Westown Square is THE BARN, a shared space for community connection and enjoyment that provides a permanent niche space for local traders, and reflects the high-street design approach that makes Westown unique.
HIGH-STREET DESIGN
Westown Square prioritises the movement of people, social spaces and lifestyle as part of the retail experience and densely-planted walkways, pergola-covered seating, large trees and planter boxes, celebrate the outdoors and set the tone for Westown as a whole. Key features of Westown Square include the Town Centre and Town Gardens as well as the amphitheatre and children’s play areas.
Designed by retail specialists MDS Architecture in a joint venture with Boogertman and Partners KZN, the high street design is open, permeable and accessible which encourages connection and interaction.
THE BARN
The Barn on The Square is positioned as the spatial heart of Westown Square, with an iconic-barn-shaped structure that will house an eclectic selection of artisanal homeware, art, beauty, fashion, food and beverage outlets, alongside quality restaurants and niche concept eateries.
Providing a permanent niche space for local traders, The Barn works hand in hand with the Westown Square tenant mix, creating a first-of-its-kind retail shopping environment that will make this one of the region’s most popular local and tourist destinations.
“THE BARN is designed around the experience of meandering through a high street market, where shoppers can explore what’s on offer, grab something fresh to eat from a local vendor or sit and enjoy a coffee or drink while watching local musicians perform,” says Lana Pattison divisional director of retail leasing for Westown developers, Fundamentum Property Group. 🎥 Take a walk through The Barn
INVESTMENT PARTNERS
As the development of Westown progresses, so too has the show of confidence in the development, with Absa Investment Bank (Absa) as the primary funder of Westown Square. This catalytic investment, together with the R730million in roads and other infrastructure currently under construction by the eThekwini Municipality in partnership with Fundamentum, has not only enabled Westown to get off the ground but will leverage a further R14Bn in investment across the Westown development over the next decade.
