Welcome to
Westown Square

A Retail High-Street Experience

Primed to set the trend in retail shopping experiences, Westown Square is a world-class retail experience designed as a high street environment where indoor meets outdoor and the characteristics of the Shongweni green belt are reflected.

The first development activity within the greater 100ha Westown development, the  50 000m² Westown Square high-street retail experience brings together shopping, dining, living and recreation for all ages, with a national tenant mix enhanced by local niche offerings that will reach the Outer West community and beyond.

Designed by retail specialists MDS Architecture in a joint venture with Boogertman and Partners KZN, the high street design is open, permeable and accessible which encourages connection and interaction.

Westown Square prioritises the movement of people, social spaces and lifestyle as part of the retail experience and densely-planted walkways, pergola-covered seating, large trees and planter boxes, celebrate the outdoors and set the tone for Westown as a whole. Key features of Westown Square include the Town Centre and Town Gardens as well as the amphitheatre and maze, along with children’s play areas.

Leasing in Westown Square has far exceeded expectations with more than 80% of space already taken by some of the country’s biggest retail heavyweights, as well as a tranche of well-known national and international fashion retailers.

Confirmed anchor tenants include Checkers Hyper (The Shoprite Group), Pick n Pay, Dischem, Edgars (Retailaibility), Mr Price, and Clicks, each bringing their latest generation, premium stores to the underserved Outer West for the first time. We are very excited to bring Westown Square to market with such strong national brands. This is just the beginning – there is much, more to come.

As the development of Westown progresses, so too has the show of confidence in the development, with Absa Investment Bank (Absa) as the primary funder of Westown Square. This catalytic investment, together with the R730million in roads and other infrastructure currently under construction by the eThekwini Municipality in partnership with Fundamentum, has not only enabled Westown to get off the ground but will leverage a further R14Bn in investment across the Westown development over the next decade.

Westown Square will open in March 2025 and forms part of the approved development rights of approximately 520 000m² of bulk floor area within Westown’s Urban Core. This retail hub will be supported by a number of interconnected precincts and experiences including:

  • Residential apartments – Shongweni Park and others
  • A warehousing and logistics precinct
  • Commercial and business activities
  • The West Private Hospital
